Traditional Treatment:
Day 0: Consultation - During the consultation Dr. Elkins will do an exam on your pet and listen to the heart and lungs. She will then talk with you about our two treatment plans and which one she recommends based on your pet's health, age, and history. You will be sent home with an antibiotic, steroid and heartworm prevention. Heartworm prevention is sold separately. We will then schedule you to come back 60 days later to start injections. You should restrict activity until your pet is cleared by a veterinarian to return to normal activity.
Day 60: 1st injection - On this day your pet will get their 1st injection. We will give pain medication and a steroid in the clinic and also send some home with dates to come back for the next injections. At this time your pet will be on strict kennel rest for 24 hours with close monitoring at home. We do not keep pets overnight in the clinic.
Day 90: 2nd injection - On this day your pet will get their 2nd injection. Again we will give pain medication and a steroid in the clinic and you will also go home with some. You will come back 24 hours later for the final injection. Again, your pet will be on strict kennel rest for 24 hours with close monitoring at home.
Day 91: 3rd injection - On this day your pet will get their 3rd injection and you will continue with the pain medication and steroid sent home until gone. Another 24 hours of strict kennel rest with close monitoring at home.
Day 120: Interim Assessment of Health and Microfilaria Status - Dr Elkins will examine your dog to determine his/her status following treatment. The exam will include listening to the heart and lungs as well as testing for microfilaria (this test will not determine if a dog is negative or positive still) This exam will help Dr Elkins determine when your pet can gradually resume normal activity.
